In this chapter, the author examines the nature of qualitative research; emphasizing that such research does not simply mean the absence of numbers. It is inductive, constructionist and interpretivist, which differentiate it from quantitative research. Qualitative research can take many different forms and has passed through a number of stages, which have allowed it to transform and mature as a research method.

The nature of qualitative research in general is important for academic research since it allows one to decide what type of research one wishes to participate in. Such a decision is essential for the formation of ones research question.

The critiques of qualitative research is an element that is useful in the development of my thesis because it allows me to weigh the pros and cons of quantitative and qualitative research and ultimately decide what type of method to use.
