The level of analysis of the discipline of International Relations is concerned with the balance of power. The balance of power can mean and be associated with a number of different relations, agents and times. One must define it’s meaning in order to partake in analysis of International Relations.

This is important for academic research because it constitutes what many consider the basis of International Relations; power relations. In order to attempt to understand the way the ‘international’ functions in comparison to the ‘national’, the understanding of balance of power is essential.

Discussion of the characteristics of the international political system, central preoccupation of States, balance of power, and of the nature of States as a whole aids in the development of my project. Each are topics central to the analysis of International Relations and in understanding/beginning to examine such topics, one becomes more equipped to analyze the International and begin questioning; thus able to focus and form a hypothesis.
